Table Mountain: Cape Town’s Iconic Natural Wonder

Rising above the city with its famous flat top, Table Mountain is the landmark that makes Cape Town instantly recognisable. A Mountain Like No Other

Table Mountain is part of Table Mountain National Park, which stretches from Signal Hill all the way down to Cape Point. The mountain’s flat plateau is about 3 km wide, and its highest point, Maclear’s Beacon, sits at 1,086 m above sea level. The rock that makes up the mountain is hundreds of millions of years old, making it one of the oldest mountains in the world.

On windy days you may see the “tablecloth”, a thick layer of cloud that spills over the edge of the mountain when the south-easter blows. It’s a sight locals love and visitors never forget.

Plants and Wildlife

The mountain is part of the Cape Floral Region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the richest plant kingdoms on earth. More than 2,000 plant species grow on Table Mountain alone, many of them found nowhere else. Look out for proteas, ericas and colourful fynbos along the trails.

Keep an eye out for the dassie, or rock hyrax, a small furry animal often seen sunning itself on the rocks near the upper cable station. You may also spot lizards, sunbirds and, if you’re lucky, a klipspringer on the cliffs.

Things to Do

Ride the cableway. The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway has been carrying visitors to the top since 1929. Its modern cars rotate a full 360 degrees during the short ride, giving everyone a view of the city and coastline.

Hike to the top. There are several routes for different fitness levels. Platteklip Gorge is the most direct and popular, taking about two to three hours. India Venster is steeper and involves some scrambling, while Skeleton Gorge starts from Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden and winds through lush forest.

Explore the summit. Walk the easy paths across the top, visit the viewpoints and enjoy a meal or coffee at the café while taking in the views.

Watch the sunset. Evenings on the mountain are magical, with the sun dropping into the Atlantic and the city lights coming on below.

Try something adventurous. Abseiling off the top of Table Mountain is one of the most thrilling ways to experience it.

When to Go

Table Mountain is open all year, but the weather decides everything. The cableway closes when it’s too windy or when cloud covers the top, so always check the status before you head out.

Summer (November to March) brings long sunny days, but the south-easter can be strong, so mornings are often the best time to go. Winter (June to August) is cooler and wetter, but clear days after a storm can give you some of the sharpest views of the year.

Try to go early in the day to beat the queues and the wind.

Getting There From Durban

By air: The easiest option is a flight from King Shaka International to Cape Town International, which takes about two hours. From the airport it’s roughly a 30-minute drive to the lower cable station on Tafelberg Road.

By road: Cape Town is around 1,600 km from Durban, so driving is best saved for a longer road trip along the coast.

Once in Cape Town, you can drive or take a ride-hailing service to the lower cable station. Parking fills up quickly in peak season, so arrive early.

Check the weather and cableway status before you go, as conditions change quickly.
Book cableway tickets online to skip the ticket queue.
Never hike alone. Go in a group, tell someone your route and stick to marked paths.
Start hikes early and allow plenty of time to get down before dark.
Take water, snacks, sunscreen and a warm layer, even on hot days. It’s often much cooler and windier at the top.
Wear proper shoes with good grip for the rocky trails.
Don’t feed the dassies or any other wildlife.
